IPL therapy explained
IPL treatment, also known as photofacial, is a popular non-surgical treatment for improving your skin's appearance. It uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to target various concerns and can be a great way to achieve a more even and youthful complexion.
In simple terms, IPL uses bursts of bright light to zap unwanted stuff in your skin.
- Like a flashlight with different colored settings, IPL can target different things.
- For brown spots or sun damage, the light heats up the pigment, causing your body to get rid of it, leaving your skin tone even.
- For unwanted hair, the light zaps the hair follicle, making it harder for hair to grow back.
It's not like a laser that uses one colour of light. IPL uses many colours, making it good for different skin concerns.

Answers to my clients' most popular IPL treatment questions
What should I expect during and after the treatment?
During the treatment, you will wear protective eyewear and feel a mild discomfort. After the treatment, the skin may appear red and slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn.
These effects usually subside within a few hours to a few days.
Is IPL treatment painful?
IPL treatment is generally well-tolerated. The sensation during treatment is often described as a feeling of warmth or a rubber band lightly snapping against the skin.
A topical anaesthetic cream can be applied before treatment to numb the area if required.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects may include redness, swelling, and temporary changes in skin pigmentation. Rare side effects can include blistering, scarring, or infection.
